[Notes en anglais de Ruth Davis :] Track 1 (00 – 6.27) 05-06-78 stereo Place: Courtyard of the bridegroom’s house in Hara Kebira Repertory: Tunisian popular songs (00 – 4.14; then chatting and ‘ūd ) Performers: band of Muslim and Jewish male musicians on violin, accordion, darbūka and ṭār, led by Yakob Bsiri – solo voice and ‘ūd. The band was amplified. Scene: The first night of wedding celebrations in the groom’s house: the eighth night of a traditional Djerban Jewish wedding. The bride remains in her parents’ house with her close female relatives. The courtyard is filled with tables at which the male guests are eating and drinking. The women are pressed, mostly standing, against three sides. In front, a platform has been erected for the musicians who are seated round a table laden with beer and bucha (fig spirits). I place one microphone on the table in front of the ‘ūd and I mounted the second on the stand, directing it towards the speakers. I had received the family’s permission to record and no-one was disturbed.
