- Dans la maison du rabbin [Notes en anglais de Ruth Davis :] Place: room in a home of a Jewish family in Houmt Souk Performer: Rabbi Attourgi of Hara Kebira Reading from the Torah (the first five books of the Hebrew bible) The Ten Commandments, Exodus XX, 1–17, beginning v. 2: אנכי יהוה אלה׳ם (I am the Lord your God) Scene: I was advised that a rabbi would be the most authoritative source of liturgical cantillation. Since as a woman I could not approach a Djerban rabbi directly I asked a young Jewish friend to act as an intermediary. Rabbi Attourgi was reputed to have a good voice and he agreed to be recorded at the intermediary’s home in Houmt Souk. My friend made two journeys to transport me with my equipment and the Rabbi separately from Hara Kebira since the rabbi could not travel in the same vehicle as me. The two men sat together in a room with the microphone while I controlled the tape recorder in an adjoining room, communicating with my friend through a crack in the doorway. Rabbi Attourgi didn’t have time for all the texts I requested and he inserted others of this own choosing. At the end of the session my friend escorted him home. I had not for a moment been in direct contact with the rabbi.
