"Les Ottomans qualifiaient ce rythme d’indien, mais dans le passé, le vocable
« Inde » couvrait aussi l’Afghanistan. De fait, le 7/8 dans un tempo moyen ou rapide est
par excellence le rythme des Iraniens (Kurdes, Khorasanais, Tadjiks, Afghans, Pashtouns,
etc.). Il convient aussi bien à la poésie (mètre ramal) qu’aux instruments et à la danse. Les
Ottomans avaient un goût particulier pour les rythmes lents, et c’est dans un tempo lent
qu’ils jouaient leurs 7 et 14 temps, ce qui est rare dans les autres cultures. Curieusement, un
rythme ralenti devient autre chose, alors qu’une mélodie jouée un peu plus grave ou aiguë
reste elle-même, c’est pourquoi on peut jouer Mâhur aussi bien sur DO que sur FA aigu.
C’est ce tempo qu’on a choisi pour cette pièce, mais on retrouve sur ce CD un 7 temps plus
courant et plus rapide dans d’autres compositions. (Santur, ‘ud, ney, ‘ud, zarb.)"

“The Ottomans labeled this rhythmic cycle “Indian”, but in the past, the term India also covered Afghanistan. In fact, the 7/8 in a medium or fast tempo is the privileged cycle of the Iranians (Kurds, Khorasanis, Tajiks, Afghans, Pashtuns, etc.). It is suitable to poetry (ramal meter) to instruments and dance. The Ottomans had a particular taste for the slow tempo, and it is in a slow tempo they interpreted their 7 and 14 beats, which is rare in other cultures. Curiously, a slowed cycle becomes something else, while a melody a little higher or lower does not change much, so you can play the mode Māhur in C as well as in F. It is the tempo chosen for this piece, but on this CD we find more common and faster 7 beats. (Santur, tār, 'ud, ney, zarb.)"
