"Récitation épique du genre Satsuma-Biwa, interprétée par Kinshi Tsuruta qui s'accompagne elle-même au luth.
La récitation d'épopée, sous sa forme actuelle, date du XVII siècle et doit son nom à la province de Satsuma (Japon méridional), ainsi qu'au luth piriforme à quatre cordes, biwa, joué avec un grand plectre. K.Tsuruta en est actuellement la représentante la plus fameuse. Autrefois divertissement pour soldats, il s'agit aujourd'hui d'un genre austère dont la sobriété n'exclut pas l'expressivité rendue par la technique vocale de l'interprète : ornementation riche mais discrète et subtile et, surtout, une émission en registre de poitrine qui convient au sujet martial du récit, avec seulement de brefs passages à caractère ornemental en voix de tête.
Cet extrait raconte l'un des nombreux épisodes de la bataille qui opposa les clans Heike et Genji au cours du XII siècle."
"Epic recitation of the genre Satsuma-Biwa, performed by Kinshi Tsuruta, who accompanies herself on the lute.
Recitations of epics, in their present form, date from the 17th century and owe their name to the province of Satsuma (southern Japan), as well as to the pear-shaped lute biwa, played with a large plectrum. K.Tsuruta is presently the most famous of such performers. Formerly a diversion for soldiers, it has become today an austere genre whose sobriety does not exclude expressivity, as shown by vocal technique of the executant : rich but discreet and subtle ornamentation and, above all, a delivery in the chest register, suitable to the martial subject of the recitation, with just a few brief passages of an ornamental character in head voice.
This extract tells of one of the numerous battle episodes between the Heike and Genji clans during the 12th century."
