Ce type de chant responsorial ressemble bcp au chant religieux de cérémonie, mashrab, couramment pratiqué à Sanaa, avec un refrain à la louange du Prophète et des solos en couplets. Cependant, le mode de chant s'en distingue par un détail remarquable : le couplet est suivi de syllabes non signifiantes (Ah ah hawma), ce qui n'est jamais le cas dans le mashrab religieux, mais au contraire, la caractéristique des chants profanes.
