Indiqué sur la jaquette : In 1991, some ethnomusicologists brought a Romanian "braci" to Paris. This popular viola was made before their eyes in Carel, by Dumitru Jederan. Afeter first being housed at the Musée de l'Homme, it was transferred in 2006 with the rest of the European musical instrument collections to the Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée. Two years later, when the removal cases were opened, we noticed that the instrument had been damaged. The glue had not held, and the fingerboard had come loose from the body. How was that possible ? What kind of glue had been used and why ? How were we going to restore this instrument which had been using ancient techniques, which are no longer familiar to classical violin-makers ? Did we need to use the same glue in order to reconstitute the same instrument ? Could we restore it to a payable state ? There were numerous such technical and ethical questions... This film depicts the restoration of the instrument, carried out by Wolfgang Fruüh at the laboratory of the museum of the Cité de la Musique in Paris. From its initial construction in 1991 to its restoration in 2011, we follow the various stages leading to the renaissance of this Rumanian brach.
