- Les communautés Gandharba, Badi et Dami sont depuis longtemps les gardiennes des traditions musicales séculaires du Népal. Les musiciens de ces communautés dalit ont conservé une fierté inébranlable pour leur art, malgré la discrimination persistante dont ils sont victimes en raison de leur caste. Nombre de grands maîtres de la musique vieillissent et il est aujourd'hui plus que jamais nécessaire d'inspirer une nouvelle génération à s'approprier ces traditions musicales ancestrales. C'est pourquoi l'UNESCO a organisé, en février 2009 à Katmandou et Patan, un événement de trois jours intitulé « La musique des dieux : le patrimoine culturel immatériel des castes musicales du Népal », rendant hommage aux musiciens qui perpétuent cet art.
The Gandharba, Badi and Dami communities have long been the guardians of the centuries old musical traditions of Nepal. The music performers of these Dalit communities have retained an enduring pride in their craft despite the relentless discrimination of their castes. Many of the great musical masters are aging and now more than ever there is a pressing need to inspire a new generation to embrace these age-old musical traditions. This need inspired UNESCO to organize in February 2009 in Kathmandu and Patan a thee-day event entitled, Music of the Gods: the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Nepal's Musical Castes, paying tribute to those musicians, who continue to keep this art form alive.
