Présentation du coffret par l'éditeur :

"Series 7 comprises the recordings made by Rudolf Pöch in the course of his Kalahari expedition which he started at the end of 1907 on behalf of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna. His aim was anthropological and ethnographical research amongst the "Bushmen" of the Kalahari, augmented by botanical, zoological, geographical and geological studies. The film and sound recordings were made between April and August 1908. The language recordings are of significance especially in the field of comparative linguistics, as they may give insight into aspects of linguistic change in Naro.
The music recordings may well represent the oldest sound documents of polyphony of the Khoisan-speaking peoples in the south-west of Africa."

Title
Pochette du coffret : Rudolf Pöch's Kalahari Recordings (1908)
Description
Series 7 comprises the recordings made by Rudolf Pöch in the course of his Kalahari expedition which he started at the end of 1907 on behalf of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in Vienna. His aim was anthropological and ethnographical research amongst the Bushmen of the Kalahari, augmented by botanical, zoological, geographical and geological studies. He stayed there from December 1907 until November 1909. The language recordings are more than valuable in comparative linguistic respects, because they may significantly suggest one or other aspect of linguistic change in Naro. Pöch’s music recordings may well represent the oldest sound documents of polyphony of the Khoisan-speaking peoples in the south-west of Africa. Even though several expeditions during the second half of the 20th century succeeded in documenting these styles of music once again, it is to be feared that these polyphonic ways of singing are gradually dying out. This is the second of Pöch’s collections assembled by this pioneer in phonographic, photographic and cinematographic field work. His collection from Papua New Guinea (1904–1906) has already been published as Series 3 of the Complete Edition.

Biographie de Rudolf Pöch
Description
Extrait de la page wikipédia :
"Rudolf Pöch (April 17, 1870, Tarnopol, Galicia - March 4, 1921, Innsbruck), was an Austrian doctor, anthropologist, and ethnologist.
Pöch is also known as a pioneer in photography, cinematography, and audio engineering. He can be regarded as a founding father of the Institute for Anthropology and Ethnography at the University of Vienna.
His work for the Ethnological Museum in Berlin inspired Pöch to undertake an expedition to New Guinea (1901–1906), where he was the first to find scientific evidence for the existence of pygmies. Pöchs technical equipment is especially noteworthy. It included a photo camera, a cine camera and a phonograph, which enabled Pöch to take pictures, video and audio documents of the indigenous population. His 72 recordings of songs and narratives in Papuan languages were seen as a sensation at the time.
A second expedition between 1907 and 1909 led Pöch to South Africa. During World War I, Pöch became (in)famous for his ethnological studies in prisoner of war camps.
Although many of Pöch's theories on the indigenous people of New Guinea proved false, scientific research and museums still profit from his collections. Today, his technical equipment is on display at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna."
