- Le nom de "Petenera" ferait référence à une femme juive d'un village de la province de Cadiz, désignée par La Paternera, qui s'est altéré dans le temps en Petenera. Cette femme séductrice a pris la forme d'une sirène enchanteresse dans la huasteca, et c'est pourquoi le chant fait souvent référence à la mer et aux marins.
